A Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Song.
A Song of the Farm.
Wann’s net fer unsere Bauere waer,
Was waer dann unser Marrick?
Mer hett yoo nix zu fresse meh:
Un sell waer drumm so arrick!
Die Bauere bringe yoo alles bei:
Du brauchscht dich gaar net griwwele;
Sie bringe glee un groosse Sei
Un grooss un gleene Zwiwwele.
Wann uff der Marrick gehscht, gebt besser Acht
Wann Fleesch witt fer zu koche:
‘S waar doch nie ken Ox geschlacht
Ass Fleesch hott unne Gnoche!
Datt sin yoo Fisch uff sellem Disch,
Wann’d witt, du kannscht sie hoole;
Die dicke sin die Katze-Fisch,
Die lange sin die Ohle.
Guck, Lewwerwascht dutt yuscht so viel,
Offkors sell kammer denke;
Un wann mer Lewwer hawwe will,
Dann losst mer die Broodwascht henke.
Sie bringe Turkey, Ente un Gens,
Deel doode un noch leewiche;
Un deel sin geroppt bis an die Schwens:
Die annere sin im Kessel!
Wann’s net fer unsere Bauere waer,
Was waer dann unser Marrick?
Mer hett yoo nix zu fresse meh:
Un sell waer drumm so arrick!
If it wasn’t for our farmer folk,
What markets could be had?
We wouldn’t have anything to eat,
And that would be just too bad!
To market, the farmers bring everything:
Don’t need to complain at all!
They bring the onions little and big
And the pigs that are great and small!
Look out when you go to the market
And want to buy meat to eat:
There never was a butcher yet
Who sold me boneless meat!
On that stall there’s plenty of fish,
Enough for many meals:
The fat ones are the catfish;
The long ones are the eels!
Look, liverwurst is just as good:
It has that country tang!
But if anyone wants liver,
Just let the liverwurst hang!
Turkeys and geese and ducks they bring;
Dead ones and live ones, too;
And some are plucked to the end of their wing,
And others are in the stew!
If it wasn’t for our farmer folk,
What markets could be had?
We wouldn’t have anything to eat,
And that would be just too bad!
