Francis Hopkinson

Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791) was an American author, composer, government official, and judge.

“‘The Raising: A New Song for Federal Mechanics’ was sung at a procession that included eighty-eight tradesmen in Philadelphia on July 4, 1788, to celebrate Pennsylvania’s adoption of the Constitution. This song, with its emphasis on workers’ tools and skills, links the erection of a building with the formation of a new nation… offer[ing] some insight into the political sensibilities of artisans as they insisted on recognition of their importance (as skilled workers but also as builders of a democracy) in opposition to elite governing bodies and property rights.”
