John Addington Symonds (1840-1893) was an English author, gay rights advocate, poet, and socialist.

"One of the best expressions of man's yearning for a nobler world, the well-known hymn 'These Things Shall Be' was written by the Victorian poet and essayist John Addington Symonds (1840-1893). In his own day, Symonds was famous for his seven-volume work, The Renaissance in Italy, but these brief verses are likely to outlive that monumental classic."
