James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American critic, diplomat, editor, and poet.

"James Russell Lowell distinguished between "a socialism which means 'the practical application of Christianity to life, and has in it the secret of an orderly and benign reconstruction,' and State Socialism, whose disposition is to 'cut off the very roots in personal character—self-help, fore-thought, and frugality—which nourish and sustain the trunk and branches of every vigorous commonwealth."

—Horace Elisha Scudder, James Russell Lowell: A Biography, Volume 2
